Question
I have adopted a 3yr old male pomeranian. unfortunately his undercoat is very matted. Can you suggest a way to get the matts out with as little stress to him as possible? I've been told that if i have him shaved, his fur will not grow back.

Answer
It should grow back once he sheds his coat out in the spring, but the color and texture may not be the same. If you want to try dematting, you need to carefully "slice" through the mats close to the skin using a sharp pair of barber shears so that you make several smaller mats. Rub a bit of Cowboy Magic Detangler (a horse product) into each mat and try working the mat apart using fingers, brush, or comb (or a combination of all three).

Look for Cowboy Magic Detangler online or in a place that sells horse supplies; a little will go a long way. The brush I recommend is the large Universal slicker brush.
