Dog on the bed

Question
Hello Charlotte,
I have recently acquired a dog that is about 8 months old.  His name is Otis and is very loveable.  He's a Hound/Beagle mix.  The problem is that ever since the day we got him, he wants to be with my wife and I in the bed all through the night.  My wife doesn't mind but it drives me crazy.  I want him to be in the room with us but on his own doggie bed.  I've tried to teach him to go there instead but he doesn't pay any attention.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you!
Chris

Answer
Hi Chris;
Oh dear, the wife doesn't mind. That is not good for your side. LOL
A Beagle is a chore to train anyway, but he gets cuddled all night, so he won't want to give that up.
My husband had never slept with animals either, until he married me. LOl
Maybe a bed of his own, right beside mommy's side of the bed, so she can reach down and touch him. Maybe even a bed raised high enough for him to be on it, and feel like he is beside mommy.
Obviously, he considers mommy the alpha, so he is going to mind her and ignore you.
You may just have to adjust, Chris.
You could check into obedience classes at Petsmart or Petco. If you took him through obdience class, this should help establish you as the alpha in the family.
Without your wife helping to teach him to go to his own bed, I am afraid it is a hopeless case.
He is getting spoiled by mom.
