My schnauzer pees in his kennel

Question
Hi! I have 9 month old schnauzer who is potty/kennel trained except for when he has temper tantrums (so I suspect).  Yesterday my husband and I were sitting in the living room watching T.V. and Balston (our puppy) was in his kennel as he had been out most of the day.  My husband had just taken him out to go potty... 5 minutes later next thing you know he peed in his kennel with no bark or warning.  He didn't have too much water and he is able to hold his pee through out the night and when we are at work.  We've had him checked by the vet no problems there.  To me it seems like he does this on purpose because he knows better.  1st, I don't understand why he would pee in his kennel... thats his home.  2nd how do we get him to stop, he doesn't do this all the time, it only seems like this happens when he wants his way.  It had been two weeks since he did it last and I was just telling my husband that it seems like we are past that.... then this happend again.  Help please.

Answer
I wouldn't call it a temper tantrum, but likely it is a protest.  The solution is to give notice you are in charge and can crate him when you feel like it.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
