Question
Hi, We have a 15yr old chowchow. She is in poor health, lately (this morning) she urinated on the floor and it was gel like. It appears very concentrated. We can not get into the vet until the end of the week. Any thoughts on what could be causing this.
Thanks,
Amanda

Answer
Hi Amanda,

Even though you won't be seeing the veterinarian until the end of the week, you should bring a urine sample down to your vet's office now, so the test results can be ready when your appointment rolls around, and treatment can promptly begin.

To collect a urine sample, attach a light, thoroughly cleaned container, like an empty margarine tub or small plastic container, to the end of a yardstick, or you can just hold it. Keep your dog on a leash when you take her out, so she can't get too far away from you.
When she starts to urinate, slip the container into the urine stream. Pour the urine into a clean jar that seals tightly. You don't need a whole lot of volume for most tests. About an eighth of a cup is usually all that's needed.

Your dog may well have a urinary tract infection.
Signs of an infection can include blood in the urine (but not always), cloudy or thick urine or particles of thick material within the urine. Often there is an extremely foul and strong smell to the output, which may be very small with each attempt to go to the bathroom. Often the dog will strain repeatedly and only produce a few drops. The dog may also lick the area frequently. Antibiotics are very effective in treating urinary infections in dogs and are generally given orally for a week or more to ensure the infection is completely eliminated.

Keep your dog drinking, and give her frequent opportunities to go outside to relieve herself. Drinking water helps flush out the bacteria that builds up causing urinary tract infections. You can also mix water (or low fat/low sodium chicken broth) into her food, which will allow her to get more water in her system.
If you can't get your dog to drink water, try Pedialyte. Dogs often like it's sweet taste.

Best of luck,
Patti
