Question
hi i just brought home a 4 month old rott/boxer mix puppy. after one day in our house she started coughing. we took her to the vet and they said she has bronchitis. the vet gave us antibiotics and told us it'll probably take 7 to 20 days before she starts feeling well. my question is just how do we help her along the way to getting better? its been two days since shes been on the medication and she shows no signs of getting better. i know that may be too early to tell, but i just don't want to wait until she gets worse before we do anything for her. How long does it really take before you can see improvement in your dog? Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated. thank you for your time and patience. Have a great day.

Answer
Hi Adam,

Two days really isn't long enough to expect to see signs that your puppy is getting better, but she is, because you're giving her the prescribed medication. It really can take up to 20 days for your puppy to get over this. You should start seeing improvement in a week to 10 days.

Provide exercise only as your puppy can tolerate. Do not allow your dog to get short or breath with activity. If your puppy wears a neck collar, using a harness instead will take the pressure off of her neck. You may want to put a vaporizer near where your puppy spends a lot of time, so she can inhale humidified air.
Keep your puppy out of "environmental stresses" that include house dust, chemical fumes and tobacco smoke.

Along with the prescribed medication, you can give your puppy a mixture of half a teaspoon of powdered ginger mixed into two teaspoons of honey, three times a day. Let your puppy lick it right off the spoon. The honey is soothing to the throat and has antibacterial properties, and the ginger is a mild anti-inflammatory.

If you the condition seems to get worse,  you must go immediately go back to the veterinarian. It is possible for a dog to have recurring episodes of bronchitis.

Best of luck,
Patti
