my dog scratching a lot no fleas or other bugs and after he has a bath it only takes a couple hr and he has a bad odor .the Vet tod me it was ok to bade him 2 to 3 times a week what else can I do to help stop the itch and bad odor.

Hi Beate,

Chronic itching and skin that has a bad smell is often due to "yeast dermatitis" (called Malassezia dermatitis). There are several simple, painless tests your vet can do in the office to confirm this. If these test haven't yet been done, you should talk to your vet about doing it. Once properly diagnosed, your vet can give you medication that will help your dog. Treatment for yeast dermatitis can be topical antifungal medications (medicated shampoos, or ointments), oral medication, or both.

You didn't say what you've been shampooing your dog with, or if he is on any other medications.

The yeast overgrowth that causes the skin infection is response to a problem which could be an allergy, seborrhea or something else. If the underlying problem is not controlled, the yeast dermatitis is likely to recur.
