Pug dog moving away from loved ones for 3 months

Question
My boyfriend has a 4 year old pug.  He is very intelligent.  Rocco, the pug, lives with my boyfriend.  Rocco comes to see me and my children, 18 and 16, twice a week.  We have a very close bond with Rocco.  If he doesn't see my family for a week or two, he is affected by it emotionally.  My question is that my boyfriend will be staying in Florida for 3 months.  I will try to visit him once during the time. Will Rocco have a difficult time understanding where my children and I are and why we are not together?  Also will he be confused when he goes to a new place to live then returns to his former residence?  Will he have a lot of adjusting to do?  Is this good for him.?  Rocco has always been treated like a person, not a dog.  My boyfriend and I talk to him like an adult.  He understands everything and can reason things out.  I'm sorry for all these questions, but we worry about his well-being and his spirit.  Thanks, any information will be greatly appreciated.

Answer
Hello Paula, Yes I am sure for the first few weeks he will have adjustment issues. As I am sure you will without him.  But it is amazing how pets adjust.  And at least your boyfriend will be familar along with his belongings.  Imagine a dog gets lost and is found by a loving family, the pet will go through some awarkward moments, but eventually adjusts to not only a new environment, but owners and a new name.  Rocco will not forget his previous residence or you and will so delighted when he returns and is reunited.  One thing that you do that is perfect is talking to him, when your boyfriend leaves Rocco in his new home, tell him that he is going out to work or the store and that he will be home later.  He will understand and learn that those words dont mean forever or another change, but that dad will come back later.  Reassurance goes a long way.  It's nice to hear so much love for a pet.  Good luck, Cindy lou :)
