Question
My dog just ranaway this evening.  He has never done this before.  My son and I attempted to catch him but he managed to run farther away to the point where we could not catch him.  I don't understand why he would do this.  Can you let me know if he can find his way home.

Thank you!

Answer
Hi Chantell;
Does he have tags on?
I hope he has come home already, but if he hasn't, call all the pet hospitals and clinins. If one of their customers find him, they will call their Vet and let them know they have him.
If he has tags and/or a chip, anyone who finds him can identify you and notify you,
Go to the city pound.
DON'T CALL THEM, and trust they will tell you the truth.
Many time the employees at these places don't care enough to even go and look, and will just say they don't have it, to save themselves the bother, when the animal may be there right then.
Go look at all the dogs in the pound every day until you find him.
Call the SPCA chapter nearest you, and call the dog rescue groups.
Get everybody looking for him.
Is this a purebred dog?
Just hope that whoever finds him has enough care to bring him home or call you, and not decide to keep him for themselves.
If you have pictures of him, put up posters. Offer a reward.
Sometimes they can find their way home, sometimes they can get frightened or confused for some other reason, and not be able to go back where they came from.
If it has rained, that washes away their scent, so they can't always backtrack by their scent.
Please let me know if you find this little guy.
I pray he is back home and safe.
You might want to see your Vet about having a chip put in.
They embed a little micro chip. It is a simple procedure, and they can lose a collar and tags, but they can't lose that chip.
Any Veterinarian, rescue group or Humane Society that comes into contact with him will scan for that chip.
I work with several rescue groups, and I often come across a stray dog, or one comes by my house. I take them to my Veterian's clinic, and the girls there scan it. There is no charge to me.
If it has a chip, I have a phone number, and name, and that little dear is on their way home.
City pounds are supposed to scan them too.
Good luck, and please let me know when you find this little guy.
