Problems with walking

Question
My 10 year old lab mix has recently been having problems walking on our wood floor.  She seems to be losing control of her hind end.  My question is, do older large breed dogs have issues like this one due to the aging process, or is this a medical problem?
Thank you for your response.

Answer
Hi Lisa,

This is indeed q problem associated with aging, but it also may be a medical problem.  Dogs over 30 pounds are prone to develop hip dysplasia. If you haven't already had your dog examined by your vet, you should. That "losing control" of her hind quarters may be a symptom of either hip dysplasia or arthritis. There is medication available that can help restore mobility and relieve pain.

To help your dog get a surer footing on your floors, lay down non-slip rubber floor mats, carpet runners, or area rugs.

Best of luck,
Patti
