Caring for My Xmas Present Pug...

Question
My pug is approximately 3 years old and was used for breeding (2 litters, but "uncooperative" as a mother I'm told).  I've had her for 3 days now, but was given ZERO history regarding shots or food.  Her personality, energy and potty habits are awesome.  I need to get her shots current (again- no idea when last shots given), get her spayed and get her the "correct" food.

Question: Is it true that the first ingredient in any food I get be some kind of "meat", like beef, lamb, chicken, etc?  This litte girl is so gassy and her movements runny... could that be because corn meal is the first ingredient?  What should I look for regarding crude fiber, moisture content and "blah blah" on the food packages?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Answer
Mike,
Yes the first ingredient should be meat.  She seems to have a sensitive stomach so get yourself some pepto bismal tablets and crush them in some food.   give her a half to start.   Also, I find that Purina One for sensitive skin and stomach is a very good food, although a bit expensive.  I also feed a little hamburger meat, the size of your thumbnail and a little rice, boiled in a bit of water (quarter of a cup)  and I have no gas problems with any of my dogs.   Now she may have a little bacteria in her intestines, you will know this if she continues to be gassy,  You can try beano (a small dose) and if that doesn't work have her checked by the vet.  In fact, if you are going to get shots, the vet can check that.   You might as well get all the shots.  This way you will know she is covered and it won't hurt her to double up.  I am assuming the prior owner is unavailable.
If you feed a better food, she will go to the bathroom a lot less because more of the food is digested.  When you have a lot of fillers (wheat and corn) as the first ingredient, she will go to the bathroom three times as much.
good luck with your new pup
If you get canned food it is 76% water, so go for the dry food with a little hamburger meat and rice.
Protein should be about 26%  water you can add, and fat lower than the protein.  The purina one has the correct proportions.
