Barking at night in the crate

19 10:30:34

Question
We just got a 3 1/2 month old hound a week ago.  He has been wonderful and very sweet.  We have used a crate for sleeping at night and for about 3 hours during the day while I work.  Up until last night he would bark or whimper for about 15 minutes and then go to sleep.  Last night he barked the entire night in the crate.  I had to get up and go outside to see if the neighbors might hear him.  We ended up letting him out (which we did not want to do) and he slept quietly in our room on his dog bed.  We do not want to do this again but are not sure how to handle this.
Thank you.

Answer
What I do is lay down by the crate like I was going to sleep there. Usually a puppy may fuss a little, but then settle down and go to sleep. Once it is asleep, you can get up and go to bed.  That has worked for us with everyone of at least a dozen puppies.
