Question
Hi- I know you mentioned that pumpkin was good for anal sac problems( I bought a can- yesterday was Thanksgiving and my two dogs did love it. What about raw carrots and broccoli my english cocker who is 9 is having chronic anal sac problems. He had them flushed out about a month ago. He got severe diarrhea recently and the anal sacs are infected again. He is currently on antibiotics- the veterinarian and I are hoping that he reinfected himself when he had the severe diarrhea( he had to be treated for that too)I BOught a homeopathic product analglandz and will get the silica once he is off the antibiotics. He loves raw vegetables and he particularly loves kale and zucchini so he has had mmany vegetables but i will step it up with the broccoli and carrots. I was wondering if raw carrots and broccoli were OK or do I need to cook them? thank you Linda

Answer
Is your vet using an antibiotic in the glands themselves as well? Usually you need to do this. I also find, through many sources and my own experience that adding Oat Bran (grocery store cereal aisle ) or Oat Beta Glucan Fiber (health food store). I have found these fibers do not cause gas. When you add fiber it is also very important to increase the water on your dogs food so the fiber will not make the dog constipated.

Toy breeds - 1/4 teaspoon
Small breeds - 1/2 teaspoon
Medium breeds - 1 teaspoon
Large Breeds - 2 teaspoons
Giant Breeds - 1 Tablespoon

Pitted prunes, dried and fed raw are great as well, two or three a week usually do it.  Raw veggies are great for dogs, but I wouldn't personally do the broccoli too much due to the problems it causes with gas.
good luck!
