Flaky elbows....

Question
I have two labradors, and for some reason both of them have what looks like a gray and dry scab on their elbows.  Not too long ago, on of my dogs elbows was bleeding due possibly to dryness.  Do you know what the problem is?

Answer
Hi Deanna,

Elbow callouses are very common in large breed adult dogs.
They result from the pressure of your dog's own body lying on a hard surface. Short haired breeds are more susceptible to getting callouses.

Calluses are not necessarily dangerous, but do require periodic checking. If you notice the callus seems to be growing larger or becomes infected and bleeds, then veterinary treatment is usually necessary. If your dog elbow doesn't seem to completely heal, and continues to bleed, you should bring it to your vet's attention.

The best prevention is providing soft bedding or padding where your dog spends a lot of time. You'll find it handy to choose material that can be replaced or washed frequently. If you already have beds for your dogs, then the calluses are probably better than what they would have if they didn't have beds. Larger dogs just develop calluses.

You can rub a little Olive Oil onto your dog's elbows to help soften the calluses. It's a terrific natural moisturizer that won't hurt your dogs if they lick their elbows.

I hope I've been a help.
Best of luck,

Patti
