Behavorial problem on Beagle

Question
Hi, there:

I own a Beagle, male,  (his name is Bagel) and he is turning to 6 this May.   We are experiencing some behavioral problem with him lately.  Here is a brief background:

Bagel was sleeping with us in our bedroom on the 2nd for the past 2 months because of the cold weather.  Before that, he was sleeping in his own crate in the garage and had no problem at all for the past years.

Last Saturday, we bought him to the vet and he was diagnosed with arthritis.  He was in shock that day because the vet was touching him to find out why he was in pain and that made him painful.   The following Monday, we had to bring him back to the vet for x-ray and dental cleaning - he was sedated that day and we picked him up at night and he slept in his crate that night and was fine.

Then, on Tuesday, he cried in the middle of the night in his crate in the garage for attention.  We reprimanded him to stop crying but then he would start again 10 minutes later.   We had no choice but brought him back up for the rest of the night because we were afraid his crying would wake up our neighbors.

We have a bed in garage so we decided in order not to wake up our neighbors for the following days, I would sleep in the bed in the garage.  Last night, I wanted to test Bagel and slept at my own bedroom on the 2nd floor and there he was again, crying in the middle of the night !  As a result, I went down to the garage and slept on the bed in the garage.  Of course, thereafter, he stopped crying and slept thru the night in his own create.

Is there anything you can advise him to do?  I don't want to sleep in the garage nor we want him up in our bedroom.  Is there any way to go back to the old way - he sleeps in his own crate in the garage without crying in the middle of the night?

I know this is long but we love our Bagel to death so please help!  Thank you.

Answer
Bagel the Beagle, eh? Cute!!

He is probably crying out for several different reasons. The first time, it was probably because he was hurting, but then he discovered that if he cried, you would come and sleep with him or bring him into the house. You've actually encouraged the behavior, so it is going to take a little longer to extinguish it.

Why can't you just put him in his crate in the house?
