Question

my 2 dogs
I have a 6 year old rottie/shepard mix, a male names rocky. We got him from a shelter when he was 8 weeks. And he was abused before we got him. He has adpated well since weve had him for about 6 years, hew neutered when we got him. He is although very timid, and scared. He does not like strangers. 4 months ago from the same shelter(north shore animal league america) we got a female rottie mix. She was 9 weeks when we got her, she was already spayed. Both dogs are up to date on vaccinations. We think the new puppy, coco, is dominant over rocky. Rocky is supposed to be the dominant dog. We feel very bad becasue coco picks on rocky, and rocky does nothhing about it. Rocky never stands up for himself against her when she steels his food or growls at him or bites him.(nibbling ears and hind legs)One time coco tried eating food out of rockys bowl and rocky snapped at her and growled. The puppy was then scared for a few days and hiding from him. She has recovered her scaredness(is tht a word). she contnues to dominate him, and now rocky is always sad and depressed.(we always feed rocky first and everything)

Answer
A male will often put up with almost anything from a female.  i don't know you can do too much about it besides letting her know your are in charge.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat.
