Question

Dog pic question about
Hi Patti,
I took in a stray and cannot figure out what he is.  The vet states he resembles a Shih Tzu, but when I look at pictures of other Shih Tzu's he doesn't look like one to me.  He does, however have the underbite of a Shih Tzu.  I would like to send you a picture of him and see if you can tell what kind of dog he is.

Thank you,

Donna

Answer

Hi Donna,

There are any number of breeds your dog might be descended from, ranging from Carin Terrier, Tibetan terrier, or Havanese. That's assuming one or both of your dog's parents were both purebred, it may well be that your dog is from a long lone of mixed breed dogs, meaning there wouldn't be a dominate breed.

When it comes down to it, nobody can say what your dog's breed mix might be. I've known several people who have had their mixed breed dogs DNA tested to find the breed heritage, it often yields unexpected results. If you're interested in having your dog DNA tested, it's a simple test. Here are two of the many pet DNA services:

Whatever your dog's breed heritage, what matters is he's 100% unique, and loves you very much.

I hope I've been a help.
Best of luck,

Patti
