Question
My dog has now a bacterial skin infection from scratching himself.I don't know what he is allergic to.So far he received a sulfur bath and is on augmentin for a week.Is this the right treatment?

Answer
Dear Trudy,

Baths are great but the problem is from within.

Have your vet run a full blood panel.  Be certain to have your dog's thyroid checked.

Allergies are often caused by diet..in particular...grains, beef, sometimes chicken or turkey.  My advice is to switch to a human grade dog food and choose low allergen kinds such as Fish & Potato, Rabbit, Venison, etc etc.  Some possibilities are Avoderm, Spots Stew, Solid Gold, Wellness, Paul Newman etc etc.

There is growing evidence that vaccinations can cause immune reactions such as skin problems.  Don't vaccinate your dog more than every 3 years for rabies.  Once your dog his puppy shots, the chances of him needing vaccinations again are slim.  You can do titer readings to see if his original vaccinations are still working.

Stay away from flea collars, topical flea/tick preventatives etc.  These are toxic and can cause allergies.

Check around your house for possible triggers of his condition, from new carpeting to lawn and house cleaners.

You can consult with a brilliant vet via phone/fax.  His name is Dr. Kruesi and he can be reached at http://www.crvetcenter.com/drkruesi.htm/

You can keep up with the sulfur baths as well as oatmeal baths.

I would also suggest adding the following to his food:

-Missing Link (J&B wholesale pet supply)
-Prozyme (J&B wholesale pet supply)
-Probiotics (B-Naturals)
-flaxseed Oil
-Vit. C (Ester C)

The best of luck with your precious pooch!
