Question
I have an australian cattle/beagle mix who is 2yrs.old I've had him since he was 8weeks old, he was neutered at 5months,for the last year every now and then he will just come up to me and pee on my leg, especially if I am not paying attention. He minds alright, I work with him on obedience, he is always with me, I have 2 other dogs, Trudy who is 9yrs. and spayed, and Bear who is 7yrs. and neutered, my ACD is the boss over Bear, but can't get over on Trudy. Can you tell me why he does this?? I spanked him for it today, and took him by the sides of his face and told him NO! sternly, Umm, by the way his name is Squirt.

Answer
Hi Roxanne;
I have answered a Roxanne before, was it you?
My Australian Shepherd mix's name is Rowdy. Dem aussiea are kooks.LOL
Methinks sqwirt is declaring to the other dogs that you are his property. That is called marking, and little males do it to "MARK" their territory.
Don't spank him for it, won't do diddly worth of good to spank.
Check with a Petco or Petsmart store in your area and see what the trainer that does the weekend classes advises for it. I have never encountered that particular problem before.
I think aussies are just very possive. Rowdy doesn't mark my leg, but if one of the other three dogs gets a pat, he is right there to make sure he gets one too.
When I sit in a chair to pet them, it turns into a shoving match.
Gee, it's great to be popular.
Sorry I can't give you a good suggestion as to what to do about this.
Max, my little Lhasa dominates Rowdy. When we got him, Rowdy was 1 year old, but he took over that puppy like he was it's mother, and didn't even like for me to tell it no.
He still doesn't, and he is 6 and Max is 5.
Max throws a fit at Rowdy, and jumps on him. He doesn't do it to the other 2. We call Rowdy Max's step dad.LOL
When Max gets nasty, I say "Do you want to go to time out?"
He calms right down. Time out is alone in a small bathroom for about an hour. No toys, no room to run around. Just a boring hour. He deosn't like time out.Silky, the 11 year old English setter, and Laddie, the 3 year old sheltie never have to be told "no".They were taught, they do what they were taught.Mom's litle angels.
Rowdy doesn't chew shoes anymore, but he gets them and hides them, then helps us look for them.
The grabbing his face and #%$%^ at him will probably do some good. Rowdy hates to be nagged.LOL
Make sure when you grab his face and chew him out, that you really sound mad. Don't use 2 or 3 words, really let him have it.
Some other trainers may have encountered this problem. I am sure he is marking you as his territory, but that an aussie could just be that much of a little devil, I wouldn't be surprised. Mine sure does some squirrely things.
