Question
I have a 4 month male lab retriever. When should I start feeding him adult food and how much of it per day? Also where I live they only sell Pedigree (which he is on now), Purina, Kirkland Brand (gives REAL soft stools) and Canine Club. I know this isn't the best food but my choices are limited. I read that Purina is better... whats your opinion? Thank you.

Answer
I know Purina is OK.  Pedigree may produce smaller, firmer stools than it.  I would have thought the Kirkland would have too.  Sudden changes of diet can lead to soft stools.  Which brand?  I know of no controlled studies comparing different chows.  Many people have very strong opinions on dog chow with little to base them on except marketing hype.  Try to stick to the same protein source.

I would go with the adult chow as soon as you choose a brand.  Likely around 3 cups divided into meals a day.  Your dog definitely should be narrower at the waist than the hips and chest. You should be able to easily feel the ribs, but not see them.  Each dog is different.  Standard recommendations are a good place to start, but each dog must have its food and exercise adjusted to its individual needs.
