walking distance for a 6 month old english pointer dog.

I have a 6 month old pointer dog.  I am aware of the damage too long a walk can have on their joints, but most of the time he does not sem to have had a long enough walk. I was under the impression that 5 mins for every month of his age is appropriate is this correct?

That rule is common, but I don't know how valid it is.  As long as you stick to unpaved surfaces and avoid running and jumping, walk all he wants.  If he seems to tire, stop.  You may have top give him a break before going back.  You should work up to longer distances so as not to overwork him before you get back.
