Question
We have a 9 year old female maltese and a 13 year old male shitzu.  We recently moved and had new capreting installed.  We came from a wood floored environment. Both dogs are taken out on a pretty consistent schedule about 4x a day.  Since we've moved into a carpeted home, lots of spraying by the male and even more peeing by our luttle girl maltese. sometimes she comes in from the yard and pees almost immediately on the carpet.  I can guess that they are relating to the grass, which is what they are used to peeing on, but we are going crazy with this.

Is there anything we can treat the carpet with to discourage them from peeing on it?

help help help!  and thanks so much!

Answer
As far as cleaning the carpet goes, get something enzymatic like Simple Solution or Nature's Miracle and let it air dry (in other words-don't blot it up. It will take a couple of weeks (literally) for the enzymes to do their job.

I think you could be right that they are equating the carpet with grass-a substrate preference is a powerful thing!

Are you sure they were housetrained at the old place?? With little dogs....another consideration is that maybe they both have a bit of a bladder infection (passing it back and forth) and the stress of the move made it worse?

Either way, you may have the best level of success with limiting their freedom in the house to un-carpeted areas and gradually increasing their freedom as they create new scent posts outside.

As well as your standard, controlling food and water (not denying them, controlling it as in on a schedule) and or adding an extra bathroom break.

You could also try DAP (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) plug in-mass marketed as "Comfort Zone". It's a synthetic pheromone diffuser that is good for about 600 square feet and lasts about a month.
