Question
I have a Yorkie and she is 10 weeks old. Her hair seems awful thin and it is oily all the time. Will her hair get thicker as she gets older and what can I use to bath her with that will get rid of all the access oils

Answer
Hi Carolyn,

Yorkies usually do not have their full coat (or the actual colors they will be) until they are at least six months old.

Your dog has plenty of time to have her hair grow in longer and thicker.  With that in mind you should know that not all Yorkies have the same hair. Some Yorkies have coarse hair as well as silky hair.  The different kinds range from coarse, silky, thick, thin, oily, dry etc. The best indicator of how your Yorkies hair will be is by the parents.  If the parents have thick hair then the puppy will probably have thick hair.

Try washing your puppy with a gentlet earless puppy shampoo, such as Fresh 'n Clean Tearless Puppy Shampoo. If your puppy's coat returns to being oily, you should have her examined by your vet to rule out a thyroid disorder or a hormone imbalance.

Hopefully, the bath will solve the problem!

Best of luck,
Patti
