Question
Dear Becky,
My husband and I just recently inherted a cohocolate lab. Her name is Robin, and she is fve years old. She is an outdoor dor. and she gets feed every morning. She is not house trained. The problem is she eats to fast, she inhales her food. We have had the dog for about two months. Robin has always been a really skinny dog. But just recently I had noticed I'm starting to notice that I can see her rib cage. Especially when she is wolfing her food down. We are feeding her 32 oz. of ol'roy dry food. Robin did have worms about 9 months ago and was treated by my brother-in-law's local vet. Should I be feeding her a different food?, Should I be feeding her twice a day?, I also read that mixing her food with puppy chow could also help?. The problem is we are only watching the dog, until my brother in law finds a house in Va. He used to live in MI, where we live. Is it possible she could have worms again? I guess I'm wondering if you have any suggestions, or should I take her to our local vet? Please help me.  Thank you so much,
Concerned pet owner.

Answer
Laurie,

Yes, change her dog food.  Ole Roy is junk.  It has very little nutrional value.  Change her to Purina ONE, Science Diet, Eukanuba, or Iams.  She is probably losing weight because the food is not good.  I would add a can of canned food to her diet too.  You need to understand that Labs are big dogs and need to eat.  It wouldn't hurt to feed her twice a day either.  She could very well have worms again.  Sometimes, they are hard to get rid of.  I think if you change her food to a better diet, add some canned food and feed twice a day, you will see a huge improvement.

God Bless,
Becky
