Question
I have a 4 month Saint Bernard puppy. Our vet has encouraged us to have her duclaws removed at the same time as her surgery to get fixed. I have heard from a few people that this is an unnecessary removal. What is your opinion

Answer
Hello Angela, I completely agree with your vet.  As a groomer I have seen many complications come for dogs having their duclaws intact.  These duclaws never hit the ground therefore do not wear down naturally and many times continue to grow completely around in a circle and back into the pad.  Another one is that because they grow in a circle and not straight out they catch on many things and can rip from the base causing severe bleeding and pain.  It is a great time to have it done while your dog is already under anesthesia and I can think of no reason not to have it done but can think of several reasons that you should have it done.  Thanks for asking Cindy Lou :)
