Miniature Dachund with Bladder stones

Question
Our miniature Dachshund started having bladder problems a week ago.  she was finally diagnosed with bladder stones and will require surgery on Monday.  She is only 4 years old.  We had fed her BillJack dog food (recommended by her breeder) during her first year and then switched to Ukanuba.  I was very surprised to find her with this problem at such a young age. the Vet has now put her on prescription diet that I understand she will need to take the rest of her life to help prevent future stones from forming.  I'm a nervous wreck anticipating her surgery.  Have you had any experience in this area?  Is there any advice you can provide?  Thank you.

Answer
Hi Renee,

I'm sorry to hear of your dog's illness.

Most stones occur in dogs 2-10 years of age. Dachshunds are one of several dog breeds that have a high incidence of developing bladder stones.

It's not your fault that your dog has developed this condition, it is a matter of genetics.

Having surgery to remove the bladder stones is mandatory, don't second guess this. Left untreated, this condition could lead to urinary obstruction, which can lead to kidney shut down and death.

Stick to the prescribed diet your vet gives you, it will helps in the prevention of new bladder stones. Feed only the prescribed diet! Do not feed your dog meat, liver or other animal tissue, vitamin/mineral supplements, calcium supplements, breakfast cereals or vegetables without the say so of your veterinarian.

Though I have never had a dog with this condition, I certainly understand your concern over the surgery. You love your dog, and want the best for her! I hope you can find some reassurance knowing that you are providing the gold standard in treatment for your dog.
