Welps on my Chihuahua

Question
My 1 year old female chihuahua has welps (swollen bumps) on her hind quarters and on the sides of her body. These are not sores, only swollen bumps or knots. She is not in any obvious discomfort. The welps appear and disappear at any given time. What could be the cause of this.

Answer
Hi Scott,

I honestly cannot say for sure, but since you say it comes and goes,  it sounds like a type of allergy. You could try giving benadryl, but I would advise you ask your vet about this first.  A safe dosage for your chihuahua would be 1 mg per pound, once or twice a day.  It won't hurt your dog even if it's not allergies, but it may make her sleepy.

Dogs are like people, they can be allergic to all kinds of things.  Your vet can also give a shot for allergies.

God Bless,
Becky
