Question
HI

we have bought a 10 month old male dachshund mix and we are having a problem with his potty habits, we let him out side about once every hour to go potty, but he has a problem in peeing in the house. when we go to pick him up he pees, or when we go to put on his collar he pee's, and i noticed today when we get even close to his side he pee's. what can I do to train him, or is he to old to potty train?

Ken

Answer
Ken,
He is frightened.  When a dog urinates when you approach, he is submitting to you.  This is what happens instinctively.  Try socializing him more and I would put a potty band on him or a dog diaper, until he feels secure.  Don't yell at him it will only make it worse.  Try to distract him with a treat when you approach him.  Throw the treat to him at first and see if he doesn't go, then take a step closer and do it again.  Keep repeating this until you can get close enough to hand it to him.  Make it a good treat (like real chicken/turkey) so he is very distracted and doesn't think about being afraid.  Go slow, it will take awhile, don't give up.
