QuestionHi--I have a 6 YO male pug & am "expecting" a 5 month old puggle next Friday. This is my 2nd attempt to bring another dog into the home (we lost our best friend in January & my pug has been depressed ever since--not to mention I miss her desperately).
Last week I brought a 2 YO shelter dog home. She weighed less than my pug but she was taller, stronger & faster than he was & he reacted pretty badly. He was scared to death of her & she completely overwhelmed him. She tried playing with hiim but was pretty aggressive about it & he ended up going after her a couple of times. She was a good dog but too much for him so I brought her back the next day.
I've been told since that I didn't introduce them correctly & that I should have brought them both to neutral territory so he didn't feel as threatened. Probably this is true but I still believe she would have been too much for him regardless.
So, I decided what I needed was a younger, smaller dog that wouldn't be as intimidating. The puggle weighs about 7-8 lbs less & is maybe 2 inches shorter. Here's hoping it's love at first site!
Should I still introduce them in neutral territory? Also, what about night time? The pug sleeps in my giant california king sized bed & there's plenty of room for one more, but would this freak him out too much on the first night? If yes, where should she sleep? I want to make this transition as easy as possible for both of them. In fact, I want it to be FUN for both of them. Any advice would be much appreciated!
AnswerAre you committed to the Puggle? I think going to a younger dog may be a mistake. Up until they are mature at 3 years old, dogs want to play puppy biting games, often overwhelming an older dog. Stick with a female, but an older one.
The neutral ground is a common suggestion, and it makes sense, but I don't know if it is something proven by any real testing, or just somebody's idea. May as well go with it. I see little down side.
