Question
My yorkie has a swollen rectal area, any ideas?

Answer

Hi Sharon,

It's possible your dog is having an anal gland problem. A dog's anal glands are normally expressed during defecation, but sometimes enough fluid is retained and then problems can occur. Some conditions can cause swelling in these glands like an infection or abscess formation, impaction, or tumors of anal glands.

Diagnosis is by physical and rectal examinations and blood tests. Antibiotics are used to treat infections and if no infection then only expressing the anal glands will solve the problem.

Of course, this is strictly guesswork on my part. I'm not a vet, and I haven't seen your dog. Your dog deserves much better than guesswork, so your next step is to have him or her examined by your veterinarian. Please don't delay in seeking treatment, your dog is probably in pain.

Best of luck,
Patti
