Question
my 8 month old samoyed has been bleeding trickles of blood. now i know it is natural for bitches to experience their first heat in this age, but she has been like this for almost 5 weeks now and im beginning to get worried now. is this normal ?? please reply as im getting increasingly worried with each passing day. Also there are no proper vets in my areas so internet is pretty much my only source for help

Answer
Hi Zubair,

Your dog's the right age for this to be her first heat cycle.

Each cycle consists of three parts: the "coming-in", the "being-in", and the "going-out", also known as pro-estrus, estrus and metestrus.  Each part lasts about seven to nine days on average. The whole process takes three or four weeks to wrap up.

When you say bleeding are you talking about drops of blood or pink tinged fluid? The fluid expelled during the different phases of the heat cycle range in color from blood (red), to pinkish, to straw colored.

Five weeks may be a little excessive, if you are sure your dog is truly bleeding blood. You should have your dog examined by a vet. You can't treat this yourself, you need to go to wherever the veterinarian is.

I highly recommend you have your dog spayed. This will completely eliminate the problem in the future.

Best of luck,
Patti
