Paw sores

Question
My yellow lab has a red, inflamed sore in between his toes that seems to be
swelling up.  He keeps chewing at it and it looks to be a bit infected.  I plan to
take him to the Vet tomorrow but just didn't know if their was some common
problem like this that you know of.  Also, could I use some hydrogen peroxide
to clean it up or is that a bad move seeing as he will probably lick at it.
Thanks for any advice that you can provide.

Answer
Hi Hacker :-)

This sore is quite common. As you've probably guessed it is caused by your Dog licking and nibbling in between his paws and this results in a red looking sore that weeps slightly. In most cases the sore is infected due to the licking and nibbling.

Applying Hydrogen Peroxide isn't a good idea hun because it will irritate the surrounding tissue and burn your Dog due to the infected sore. If possible, apply some Sudocrem Cream which you can purchase from your pharmacist to relieve the redness and discomfort. The Vet will give you some antibiotic ointment to apply to the area and this will clear it up. Meanwhile try and stop your Dog from biting and licking his paw.

Take care and all the best and please leave me a comment.
