Question
QUESTION: Hi since you do breed dogs, than you might be able to help me out here. is it true that a breeder as soon as a new puppy is born they give them vaccination so they can't transmit any diseases including rabies ? the reason for my question is that we are planing on getting a puppy from a breeder, she is only 11 weeks old , she is very nice . but i know she can't get rabies shot until she is 16 weeks old. can she transmit rabies between now and 16 weeks old (considering that she has it ) the breeder told me that she can't because she has had other kind of vaccine to protect. is this true or he is just saying that so we will take her ?
thank you

ANSWER: I've never heard of anyone vaccinating a newborn, but some puppymillers do some really strange things to their dogs. Newborns get immunity from certain diseases from drinking colostrum from their mother the first 24 hours after birth. Any vaccinations done before 8-9 weeks of age are pretty much wasted due to that immunity, and too many vaccinations can compromise a puppy's immune system.

The only way a puppy could transmit rabies would be if it was bitten by a rabid animal, and that would be a highly unlikely thing to have happen; I certainly wouldn't be concerned about it. I wouldn't inoculate for rabies until six months, unless it is required sooner where you live.

QUESTION: Hi Karen
thank you fro your reply. i got a copy of the vaccine that was given to this puppy i will list them for you ? they seemed a lot of vaccines for me so is this puppy ok , or is she sick in some way that's why he gave her so many vaccines ?
thank you in advance.

-endoserum (this was given the next day after she is born)
-puran (5 times)
-ivermection (4 times)
-intratrac
-neopar (3 times)
-iron
-giardicox
-dazppr(2 times)
-albontmetro
-vangard(2 times)
-strongd(2 times)

Answer
All I can say is..... GOOD GRIEF!!!!!

Endoserum is purely a horse product and I cannot see why he would give it to newborn puppies! http://www.drugs.com/vet/endoserum.html

puran: Couldn't find anything on it as a drug after searching through ten pages.

ivermectin: broad-sprectrum anti-parasite medication (heartworms, intestinal worms, most mites and lice)

intratrac: intranasal kennel cough

neopar: canine parvo vaccine

iron: just plain iron, I assume, and I cannot imagine why this would be given unless this puppy was loaded with massive doses of parasites.

giardicox: treatment for giardia and coccidia

dazppr: nothing listed for this. Probably initials for some product, possibly a vaccine?

albontmetro: nothing listed for this. Albon is used to treat coccidiosis.

vangard: Brand name for vaccine products such as distemper, etc.

strongid: wormer

Your puppy certainly had a lot of chemicals put in her poor body.... I would have preferred seeing exactly what she was inoculated for (i.e. Intervet ProGard 5 [which is for DA2P+PV.... Canine Distemper-Adenovirus Type 2-Parainfluenza-Modified Live Parvovirus Vaccine]) instead of such general terms as Vangard, etc. I would ask the breeder *EXACTLY* what diseases the puppy was inoculated against, and in a couple-three weeks I would take another stool sample in to your vet for examination as that breeder certainly seemed to be trying to eliminate some problem or other.
