Question
hi i hope you can help me i have 2 staffordshire bull terriers on my bitches last season she had a phantom pregnancy she acted as she always did but her nipples became enlarged and in the end they were leaking milk, she has been out of season now for around 4 weeks now and she did activly mate with our other dog on several occassions. my question is how you can tell if she is actually pregnant this time or if it is another phantom ? her tummy has become rounded and her nipples are again very big but she also seems larger around her ribs she went through a stage last week of being sick a couple of times a day but im not sure if that means anything ? and she has suddenly got very lazy like trying to lay down half way through a walk do you think any of these are a sign of pregnancy in dogs or could it just be another phantom. and also if you think it sounds like shes pregnant how long are they usualy pregnant for thank you so much

Answer
There are no absolutes, but I have found with my dogs that if they get milk at 4 weeks it is usually a false pregnancy.  When they are pregnant, they seem to only get milk the last week or so.   When she is about 7 weeks you can take her to the vet and get an xray.  That will tell you if she has any pups in there.  Also an ultrasound.
The gestation period is usually 63 days , but can go from 59 to 65.  Be careful there is no discharge that is black or green.  If this happens get her to a vet.
good luck
