Answer
Hi Darrin,

It's very common for a puppy's color to change by the time it reaches adulthood, so you can't go by that as a way of knowing if this puppy has been well bred, or not. To tell the quality of a puppy, you need to know the health, temperament and confirmation of the pup's parents, and also it's grandparents (if possible), these are the genes the puppy carries, and give you the best idea of what to expect as the puppy grows.

First, there isn't a dog breed called a "blue nose", I will assume you're taking about a Pit Bull Terrier. I don't know if you're referring to an American Pit Bull Terrier, or the American Staffordshire Terrier, or the Staffordshire Bull Terrier (all are often referred to as "Pit Bulls"). Blue Nose, Red Nose, Merle, or Silver only refer to the dog's color. There is nothing rare or special any of these colors, and you shouldn't be asked to pay for them.

If the breeder you've been in contact with is stressing the puppy's color, that's your first sign that you're not dealing with a reputable breeder. A good breeder does not put color first, it may be second or third in importance. What matters most is health - both of the puppy and of the puppy's parents (and grandparents, if known) as well as their temperaments. More likely than not this is what the puppy will grow up to be.

Responsible breeders have the mother of the litter on premises, and possibly the father of the litter. You should meet the parents of this puppy. The puppy's parents should be sweet even-tempered dogs who are not aggressive or skittish.

Pure breed dogs are prone to certain diseases or conditions, due to inbreeding within the specific breeds. For Pit Bull Terriers, they're prone to develop: hip dysplasia, hereditary cataracts, distachiasis (another eye disease), melanoma, allergies, and congenital heart disease. Responsible breeders perform DNA testing on their breeding stock to screen for these conditions, and only breed healthy dogs to get healthy puppies. You should ask the breeder for the paper work which would show the health of the puppy's linage. Given the price this breeder is asking, he or she should be able to produce proof that this litter is the most superior, healthy, even tempered puppies known to mankind.

The bottom line is, if you were going to be buying a top of the line "show quality" puppy from award winning breeding stock, then the price of $1500 or more might be justified. I would guess that neither the breeding stock or the breeder are of this caliber. You should take your time and shop around for a healthy puppy from a responsible breeder. You want a healthy dog that will be a loving pet for many many years.
