Therapy dog potential

Question
I recently put to sleep my lab/German shepard dog of 10 years.  He was a great match for my family.  He loved to chase a ball and to run with me on a distance run.  I would like to get another dog and would love the same qualities in my new dog but I would also love to consider training a therapy dog.  Are there organizations or do you have any suggestions on the type of dog I might consider which increases my chances of getting a dog with these qualities?  Any info would be appreciated.

Answer
Hi Brenda,

Thank you for writing to me about therapy dog potential.  I apologize for the wait in responding..we had a major snow storm here and I've been trying to dig out from yet another blanket of snow.

You might want to contact rescue groups that keep their dogs in real homes and evaluate them in the process.  You would want a more submissive dog that is intelligent and without big issues.  For years, all my dogs have been therapy dogs but the dog I currently adopted from a high kill shelter in Ky. sight unseen, has too many issues to consider therapy work, although in another year or two she might be ready.  The point I am trying to make is to adopt a dog that has a known temperment, that has been evaluated with other dogs, children etc, that has a laid back personality and be in direct communication with the rescue...tell them exactly what your goals are.  They want things to work out as much as you do.

I would not suggest a high energy working breed, although all my therapy dogs were working dogs, Samoyeds, but this is a very friendly loving breed so things worked out very well.

You have to decide if you prefer larger or smaller dogs.  That is a personal choice.

You can also contact Guiding Eyes for the Blind.  Their dogs are bred to be helping dogs but not all of them are qualified for guide dog work..but would make excellent therapy dogs.

I wish you the best of luck.  Therapy dog work is something I am forever bonded to..it is nourishing for everyone involved.

Shelley Davis
