Housetraining Puppy

Question
Hello! I looked at your website and I don't see anything about this - I have a daschund mix 4 month old puppy - when we got him, we were told that he was in the process of being potty trained however since we have had him, he hasn't gone to the bathroom once outside, I do all the things that is recommended - upon awakening, after meals and every 30 minutes if he isn't in his crate and to a designated spot on a leash.  How do we get him to go outside or is this a good indication that he needs to be trained to go inside? We haven't used puppy pads yet - not since we didn't want to try both things at once with him - now not sure what to do... thanks!

Answer
If your goal is to train him to potty outside, then that's what you need to focus on. As stated on my housetraining web page, you need to take him out on a leash, and if he doesn't go within 5 minutes, bring him back in but keep the leash on him, so that if he starts to go, you can quickly get him back outside without having to catch him and/or fumble to get a leash on him. When he does go potty outside, praise praise praise him!

Rather than taking him out every 30 minutes, learn to watch him and read the signs that he needs to 'go' and only take him out when he starts showing those signs. That will teach him to go to the door whenever he feels the urge to potty.
