QuestionWe have a 5mth old black lab(mix I think) who is a terror. We have a 12 year old dog and Jake tries to play with her. She doesn't want to play, so she tells him in her dog way and he just persists. Eventually it turns into a dog fight. He is very mouthy with my 6 year old and the situation goes from playing to crying very quickly. I find the boy on the floor with Jake on top. Jake is playing, but has gotten out of control for my 6 year old. When told to get off the couch he just looks at me and if I reach to grab his neck or to push him down, he tries to bite me. Has never broken skin with me, but still the act, you know. We took him to a local dog trainer who I can find no information about on the net and she used the alpha roll on him. I came home and looked alpha roll up and I just want to get Jake from her now.
I know I need help, but not her kind of help. Jake has never been one you can correct by a slight swat on the rear end. He has always continued the unwanted behavior and eventually turns on the paper you are swatting him whith. I feel I need someone to come to the house, she was the only one in our tiny town that does come out, but she convinced me I needed to bring Jake to her immediately and leave him. Now is is being alpha rolled on a regusar basis, even if he does not lie down when she forces him physically to. PLEASE HELP ME (IN TEARS)
AnswerGet him back from her as soon as possible. A few alpha rolls shouldn't traumatize him for life, but they are a bad idea as you have apparently learned. There is a lot of overstatement when it comes to dogs.
If not already, have him neutered as soon as your vet will do it. No good reason to keep a mix intact. It should be a big help, but not the entire solution.
Can you get him into an obedience class? Find one where the instructor believes in teaching the owner to be in command, but uses positive methods.
If you can't find a class, try to find one of these books:

He badly needs training, but it will take more than I can put in an answer here.
