loose teeth

Question
Jan 4/2008
I have a Pom/Scottie cross (looks like Chihuahua), was 8 1/2 years old, born in August 2007.  I took her to my vet for teeth cleaning and he said she had loose bottom teeth, so he removed all bottom ones between her eye teeth.  She had some that were still stable, but he said he removed them as they would also loosen with no support from the others.  These teeth were in perfect condition.  I feel he made the right decision, but I wonder if the stable ones should have been left.  He said I would probably be back in his office in a couple months with the stable ones and have to have them also removed, so he pulled them all at the same time.
When I brush her teeth, I use a rubber fingertip brush and use the Hartz Beef flavored toothpaste.  I would like to start using a soft toothbrush on her as I do for her brother.  She doesn't like this but her back teeth were quite corroded and so far no cavities.  She has soft food in the a.m. along with 4 or 5 hard dental chews and for lunch one milk bone and one marrow bone, the supper I alternate and give her beneful or food ball with Purina chow.  Does giving her the soft food in the a.m. cause her teeth to loosen as they really like this.  And why wouldn't her top teeth be loose?  The vet figured it could be the soft food and when I told him all that she eats during the day, he said it could be her age.  Do you think I might have caused this by brushing her teeth?
Awaiting your reply.

Answer
I would continue the tooth brushing, it should only help.  I would eliminate the soft food and dental chews.  Stick to a dry chow, it should be better for the teeth. I don't trust any of the consumable chews.  Do a net search on Greenies + "class action"
