Question
hello
I am looking to adopt a dog. I already have a few pets. I have rabbits, birds and a guinea pig. They are kept in cages and will not be allowed out with the dog. I am looking for a dog that will not go after the animals in their cages. Is there a breed that is good with other animals? Is a small dog better? Is a herding breed better?
Is it possible to have a dog with other pets? My friend wants me to take a chow she knows. I am not sure if that is a good breed with other animals
thanks

Answer
It's more of an individual thing, rather then a breed thing, but chows can be aggressive with dogs,so probably with other pets as well, also they aren't the best dog for a first time dog owner as they are stubborn, and also a one person dog and not the easiest to train, and I'm afraid to say one of my LEAST favourite breeds-although as I have said each dog is different and have met a few nice chows, but most tend to be aloof, but some people like that as well,so THIS chow might be ok

Some breeds are very laid back and are known for being good with other animals, such as shi tzus,Boston Terriers, poodles(all sizes),Labs,Golden Retrievers,Saint Bernards,pugs-so there is a wide range of sizes it's all what you prefer

And some breeds are known for being animal aggressive such as:Akitas,Siberian Huskies,Jack Russel Terriers, and in fact most Terriers except for Boston terriers, rottweilers, shiba inus, basenjis,as well as chows

Herding dogs are usually good with other animals but may want to chase them more then actually hurt them,so if you keep an eye on them they should be ok,as they are bred to be around other animals

But this isn't to say that the breeds I mentioned will all be bad or good with other animals,it's just in general what those breeds are like

Another option you might want to try is the local shelter,as staff often know what dogs are good or not good with other animals-and that chow might work out,but as I said in general they are a very one person dog and want to be in charge of everything, including other animals, but it might not hurt to meet up with this dog and see what it is like with you and your pets
