-----Question-----
Hi, we just got a new puppy for Christmas, he is now 10 weeks old. We have had dogs before and we still have a 10yr old mixed breed. So I think I am doing everything right, my 10 year old is a wonderful dog and we've had him since he was a pup. Anyway our new puppy is great except he hates his crate, I have eased into it only using it minimally, I qam a stay at home mom so I am only gone 20 min in the am and 20 min in the pm to take my kis to school. Every time I leave the house I crate him and every time he pees/poops in the crate and then makes a mess of himself in it to the point he needs a bath. What do I do?
-----Answer-----
Hi Cheri;
Well, I am a non-crate person.
I just don't see a purpose for them except to transport an animal more safely, but I do not use crates at home.
When they are small enough to maybe have an accident while I am gone, I close them up in a room that doesn't have carpet, and put down some newspapers.
You can buy litter trays and special litter for dogs now.
I don't know who came up with the idea of using crates.
They used to keep zoo animals in small cages, and now opt for a more natural setting for them, and that has proven to be a much better way to kep animals.
We get more freedom for wild animals, and then it becomes the fad to pen up our trainable domesticated animals.
Something is wrong with that picture.
I equate crating to the IDIOT ideas Dr. Spock came up with for raising babies in the 40s and 50s.
I always took my dogs with me to take kids to school and pick them up.
It got the dogs used to riding in the car other than just to go to the Vet's.
I had one long haired Calico cat that loved to go with me to take and pick up kids.
She loved riding in the car.
Always take them for their potty break before going in the car.
I waited until I ot back to give them their morning feeding.
Only a little later than normal, and they are less likely to get motion sickness or relieve themselves in the car.

Answer
If both dogs get along together, sure.
Mine have always had the run of the house, and they always get along.
My dogs even help me teach the rescue dogs I take in.
If the older dog plays with the puppy, and isn't jealous, they should be fine.
I have raised cats and dogs together too.
I don't allow fussing and fighting, so they get along great.
