Dog peeing on my stuff!!

Question
My problems is with my husband's dog. We recently got married,(8 months ago) and of course he brought his dog home. She is 6-years-old. His parents had her for a long period of time and she was very spoiled over there: sleeping with them, begging for table food, etc. Now that she is here, she doesn't get any of those "privileges" and it seems to me that she is upset about it. The reason why I think this way is because she pees on all my stuff she can find, from my couch, to my side of the bed, my pillow, and most recent one: my purse. I have no idea what could I do to correct this behavior. We have tried the crate.. We installed a doggie door just for her, we walk her and award good behavior and put her outside when behaves badly, nothing seems to work... I like a lot, she is adorable looking, but I'm really tired of this, I am running out of ideas, PLEASE HELP ME... Maggie

Answer
She is trying to let this new interloper know where she stands in the pack.  The key to most behavior problems is approaching things using the dog's natural instincts. Dogs see all the people and dogs in the household as a pack with each having their own rank in the pack and a top dog. Life is much easier if the 2 legged pack members outrank the 4 legged ones. You can learn to play the role of top dog by reading some books or going to a good obedience class. A good obedience class or book is about you being top dog, not about rewarding standard commands with a treat. Spaying her if not already would be a big help too.
