Question
QUESTION: Hi, I'm putting up this question from India. I am 20, male and I'm a dog lover. Recently I've been thinking of adopting a pup as I am feeling emptiness of one extra member in our family.

I have a big house and I live with my parents so you don't have to worry about any appartment space issues. I am thining about gettin a PitBull or a Rottweiler cuz I'm looking for an aggressive breed, don't worry I don't intend to use them for dog fights and all, also its illigal here in India and I don't wish to go to jail lol.

But breeds like Pit bulls aren't very common here as it is common in the States, so I couldn't get much info's regarding them. Before buying I need to know about them and I'm hoping that you could tell me something about'em that one needs to know before buying that breed.
Let me start with the first question:
Q.Whats the difference between a PitBull and an American Pitbull Terrier and an American Staffordshire Terrier and a Staffordshire Bull.

Q.Also I'm curious about few stuffs, such as Gatore line... And American Red Nose Pitbull lines. I've heard that American Red Nose PitBulls are much aggressive by nature than the other Pitbulls. Is this true?

Ur kind help regarding providing me the information about this will be greatly appriciated.
And Thank you for taking ur precious time to read my queries.

ANSWER: Hello, Srijan. You have asked some very good questions. First, I have to ask why you are wanting an 'aggressive breed.' Do you plan on training it to attack, or to protect your home and property from intruders?

Pit bull is a generic term, which can refer to all of the breeds you asked about (American pitbull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier, and the Bull Terrier) Often, the term pit bull is used to describe larger dogs like Cane Corso's, Dogue de Bordeaux, and other such breeds as well. The American pitbull terrier is not a recognized breed, but is very similar to the American Staffordshire terrier in appearance. Here is a link to some pictures of American Staffordshire/American pitbull terriers:

These are not large dogs. A pit bull should not be more than 60 pounds; if it >is<, then it's not a 'true' pit bull. Staffordshire bull terriers tend to be a little shorter in stature than the two breeds mentioned above. Here are some pictures of this breed:

There is no American Red Nose 'line' of pit bull. Red nose refers to the color of the dog; it is not a bloodline, and no, one color is not any more or less aggressive than another color.

The Gator bloodline is a fighting line. Dogs from this line will tend to have a higher level of dog aggression, but dog aggression is completely different from aggression towards people.

If you are wanting a dog that is going to be aggressive towards people, a pit bull is not the right breed for you. A well bred pit bull is friendly towards people, and aggressive towards dogs and other animals. This is how the pit bull was always intended to be. Pit bulls that are aggressive towards people are the product of poor breeding practices and I would strongly discourage getting one of these types of dogs.

Rottweilers are typically more protective of their home and family, and will show protective instincts with little to no training at all. If you're wanting a more protective dog, I would recommend a rottweiler over a pit bull.

QUESTION: Thanks for answering my qustion. And thanks once again for appreciating my questions, I was just doing what a responsible dog owner would before geting a dog.
I want an aggressive dog cause I think I can provide some good amount of time to train my pup. And I wish to get a dog which is aggressive towards human more than animals, in other words "guard dogs". GSD is a very common and a popular choice and I wanna get a dog besides GSD. So, I think Rottweiler would be a far better option for me if I compare both of them strength wise.
Why PitBull for me?
Well the answer is: I've heard they are very agressive.

ANSWER: As I said in my previous answer to you, a properly bred pit bull is NOT going to be aggressive towards people. I still believe that, for your situation, a Rottweiler is the better choice.

I would encourage you to find a reputable trainer, if you are interested in training your dog to protect your home and property. Reputable trainers make the training fun for the dog; they do not use fear-based tactics or harsh physical training. Beware of trainers that tell you to encourage your dog to be aggressive towards everyone. On the contrary, you should take your dog out in public and encourage him to interact with friendly strangers in a friendly manner. This helps him to learn to discern between people who are not threats, and people who are. Also beware of the trainers that tell you to do mean and inhumane things to your dog to make him mean. You want your dog to love and respect you, not fear and hate you. Why should he protect someone who is mean to him? You know?

QUESTION: Would u please suggest me other breeds besides Rotts for guarding purpose.

Answer
Srijan, I do not know what breeds are available in India, but there are many breeds that make excellent guard dogs. They may not be what you have in mind, but flock guardian dogs are probably the best choice for a home/property guard dog. These dogs are bred to be independent thinkers, which can make them a little more difficult to obedience train, but in order for them to do their job of protecting a huge flock of sheep or other livestock while no human is around, they >must< be able to make decisions on their own. These dogs can be very protective over their home and family, to the point of not allowing anyone else to enter without being restrained or confined. They do not have to be trained to be this way. Generally, they are raised with whatever animals they are intended to protect, be it sheep, cattle, llamas, or even chickens! They bond to those animals (or their human family) and will protect them from anything that they deem is a threat, from wolves and coyotes to bears, mountain lions, and poachers.

Livestock guardian breeds are as follows:

Great Pyrenees
Anatolian Shepherd
Akbash
Castro Laboriero
Maremma
Komondor
Slovak Tchouvatch
Kuvasz
Tibetan Mastiff
Caucasian Ovcharka
Kangal/Karabash

You can find information about several of these breeds at http://www.lgd.org/ or by doing a search on http://www.yahoo.com or http://www.google.com for any of them, specifically.

Other breeds that can make good guard dogs are:

Dogo Argentino
Fila Brasiliero
Dogue de Bordeaux
Presa Canario
Giant Schnauzer
Akita
Cane Corso
Bull & Neopolitan Mastiff
Boerboel
Bouvier de Flandres
Tosa Inu

Please be advised that many of these breeds are NOT suitable for a novice owner, so you would be well advised to do plenty of research on the breeds that you are most interested in, and speak to many responsible breeders, being sure to tell them exactly what you are looking for in a dog, before making a final decision. You don't want to choose a breed that is going to be too much dog for you to handle.
