House training a Rat Terrier Puppy

Question
I have had Nemo for about 2 weeks.  He is a 3 month old Rat Terrier.  At first we were doing extremely well with our training and now it seems as if we are backtracking.  I will take him outside to go to the bathroom and he thinks it is time to play.  He will urinate and then he comes inside and defecate in the house.  How do I efficiently house train Nemo?  I am starting to give up hope.  Help!!!

Answer
Hi Ashley;
No problem, you are just not staying outside with him long enough.
Playing is stimulating his bowels, and he is coming inside before they act.
Stay out and play until he sqwats and deficates.
He will not be able to hold it long, and the more active he is, the more it will stimulate his bowels. Don't come in immediately when he does go. Sometimes, they will go, and a few minutes later, they will finish up. Make sure he is finished before you bring him in, and when he does go outside, be sure to praise and pet him and make a big deal about it.
He will do what gets the praise.
Make sure you have fed him for the last time before the bedtime outside trip. then let him play, and play with him. he won't be a puppy for long, and you will miss it when he gets out of the cute puppy stage.
Take full advantage of that time together. Enjoy playing with him and get his business taken care of at the same time.
Your daily stress will melt away much faster if you have a nice relaxing play and love session with your puppy.
They are very good at giving us an outlet for stress and the problems of getting through the days.
