Question
Kristin: I bought a 1 year old Italian Greyhound that apparently was kept in a kennel with other dogs its entire first year of life but wasn't socialized to humans. I have had her for six months now and she bonded immediately to my other Italian Greyhound - Bella, but she is scared to death of all humans! She will let me pet her if she is in her crate with Bella but the minute Bella walks out of the crate, Mia retreats to the back of the crate and doesn't want any more attention. When she is in the house or outside, she will come if called but won't let us touch her and bolts if we are anywhere near her. Any ideas on how I can build her confidence or is it a lost cause?

Answer
When you call and she comes to you(which is a REALLY good sign,as some dogs won't even do that)slowly reach out and give her a tiny treat, but without trying to touch you-you want to gain her trust first

Then after a few days of doing that, try to give her a treat in one hand and slowly reach out to her with the other-this usually works even though sometimes it does take time

After she lets you touch her,you can slowly take her out in the public-but you don't want to flood her with everything at once,so have her gain your trust before doing anything else

I do not think she is a lost cause at all-it will take but you will get there
