Question
Hi Patti
I have a 10month old female samoyed which I kept for 6months.  I recently found very thick mucous in her stool and later developed in into blood and mucous in stool. The vet could not find any unusual microflora in her stool sample.  I am very worried.  what could be the causes of the mucous and blood?  what can I do to help my samoyed?  could it be her chewing habits that she ate something and injured her digestive system?  Thanks

Answer
Hi Jenny,

Blood and mucus in the stool can mean several things.

It can be a symptom of a large intestine condition such as colitis, or irritable bowel syndrome, a sign of disease like Parvo virus, or a sign of intestinal parasites. Clots or bright red blood in the stool can be a lower digestive tract problem or he may be bleeding from his anus.

Blood and mucus is a sign of a problem. If your dog is still experiencing the blood and mucus in his stools after having a test run at the vet, he needs to be taken back to the doctor to be re-evaluated, since treatments differ depending on what the diagnosis is.

Conditions such as colitis, or irritable bowel syndrome can be controlled by medication and a special diet (or both), while a disease like Parvo virus needs specific medications, and can be fairly dangerous for young dogs.

I hope I've been a help.
Best of luck,

Patti
