Question
what is the best brand name of benadryl for my dog and how much mg should I
give him he's about 21 lbs

Answer

Hi Tim,

You need not buy any particular brand of Benadryl for your dog, the generic form of the medication is called Diphenhydramine, and it's equal to the name brand. Just be sure to use regular strength Benadryl (or Diphenhydramine).

Generally, the recommended dosage of Benadryl is 1mg per one pound of your dog's weight. It should only be given to your dog every 8 hours. If your dog weighs 21 pounds, give him 3/4 of a 25mg. tablet.  The liquid form of Benadryl has a very high in alcohol content, so it should not be given to a dog.

Your dog should not be given Benadryl if he has glaucoma, lung disease, heart disease, an overactive thyroid (Hyperthyroidism), high blood pressure, bladder problems or a prostate enlargement. This medication can interact with other medications, including vitamins and supplements.  Talk to your veterinarian if your dog receives other medication to make sure Benadryl is safe to give him.

Benadryl is generally a safe medication but it may cause the side effect of drowsiness.

I hope that helps.
Best of luck,

Patti
