My dogs are killing cats

Question
Thanks so much!  I appreciate your quick response.  My dogs are only killing the cats that come into our fenced yard.  Never on walks or when we are out, just during the night when things get over the fence, they go after it.  So as long as they are fenced in and not killing the cats when they are outside of the yard, we are fine?  No worries?  I really appreciate your insight!

Hello and thanks for your time!  I have two huskies that live in a fenced in yard, however they have killed three cats in the 4 months we have had them.  They are full grown huskies, father and son, so getting rid of one of them is NOT an option.  I was wondering what the legal ramifications are if a neighbor gets pissed that our dog killed their cat.  Is it possible to get sued?  Will they take my dogs away?  What can I do to stop them from killing the cats?  They have two metal ID's on their collars that make plenty of noise when they run, so I don't know why the cats aren't running away when they hear the dogs coming.  I'm just worried about a pissy neighbor suing us or getting the dogs taken away from us.  Do you know anything about this?  Once again, I appreciate your time!

Are they killing cats in your back yard or out on walks?  If they are in your back yard they are securely fenced and contained and it is therefore up to your neighbours to keep THEIR animals suitably contained also.  If they fail to do this and their cats keep coming in your back yard this is their look out.  If you are uncomfortable with just saying its up to them then you could put up a cat proof fence - something with spikes on the top is usually good to keep them out of a certain area.
If on the other hand this is happening on walks outside your own property yes you could be liable.  The safest thing would be to keep the dogs on leads whenever they are anywhere they might come across a cat.  This might mean going a bit further afield to find a place they can run and play off lead but its better safe than sorry.  If there is no-where they can be run without the possibility of coming across a neighbours cat then you could always invest in basket muzzles for them for when they are walking off-lead.  That way they cant get their teeth into the cats and the neighbours wont have anything to complain about!
Hope this helps

Answer
Yep that should be about it.  Your responsibilty is only to make sure your animals are securely contained.  If other people cannot do the same that is their look-out.  The neighbourhood cats will get smart to staying out of your garden before very long, they certainly stay out of mine these days!
The spikes on top of the fence to keep the cats out might be a sensible precaution as then there is no possible way for anyone to say you did not do your utmost to keep the dogs in a way they were not a threat to the neighbourhood cats.
Glad to have been of help.
