Question
Hello, I'm having a problem with my naked baby scratching her neck she has done this in the past, however she had ear mites and this problem was cleared up easily. I have taken her to the vet with no avail. Her ears and all around health are fine. Why is she scratching herself raw??????

Answer
Hi Lisa and thanks for your question.

It may be that your baby is suffering from an allergy in some form. It could be environmental, seasonal, or food-related.
You could have her tested or you could try some experiments on your own. You'll want to take note on when the itchy-scratchies started. Were there any changes that had recently occured? Did it begin with the spring "bloom"? etc..... Asking some questions can often lead to possibilities.

If you notice the itching begin during the spring or they appear to be of a seasonal nature, the dog is suffereing from an allergy to some sort of pollen or plant. Using benadryl can help with this.
If you notice itching after a change in something you are using around the home (ie: washing detergent, cleaning products and such), then your dog is having some problems with environmental allgeries.
If you can't seem to pin it down to any particular thing, you can always change foods. Food allergies are becoming more common and you can switch to a food that is unique in it's protein and carb source, feeding it exclusively (no treats, people food, etc) for a period of no less than 8 weeks. A good alternative food would be a fish or duck based food with perhaps sweet potato or oatmeal for the carb. Keep it simple whatever you choose. A couple of good foods for allegy dogs are Pinnacle trout and sweet potato and Eagle Pack Duck and oatmeal, but there are several you could chose from.
