Question
Hello, I have a great female Corki, who is over weight. When I first got  her a few months back, she was very heavy. She had become pretty active on the farm, and we walk the whole farm at least a few times a week. She is around 3-4yrs, and recently got her spayed.Still pretty active, but am not sure if I should continue to  feed her 2x a day,sm,meals or one. What kind of dog food should she be on? She is on pedigree, dry & soft, she is a picky eater. Tried Science diet, she wouldn't eat it. I have  always had bigger dogs in the past that were very active,so I never ran into,I couldn't resist  this problem before. She is so sweet,I couldn't resist adopting her! She also has a "smelly coat".I got some medicated dog shampoo, and it doesn't seem to help. Her breath at times is just as bad.Any help greatly appreciated!

Answer
Hi Connie,

Thanks for writing to me and sorry for the delay..I've been sick with the flu.

Feeding twice a day is easier on the digestive system and it gives her something to look forward to.  Make sure that she rests prior to and about an hour after eating to avoid the dreaded Bloat, a life threatening condition.

The smelly coat could be from a thyroid condition, food allergies, over vaccinating or some other medical problem.  Medicated shampoo has toxins in it...best to use an herbal shampoo and then concentrate on what's causing it.

I always encourage people to feed as much real food as possible and if you want to feed dry then a human grade, high quality food.  Whole Dog Journal has an article that can be googled discussing the 10 top dog foods out on the market.  They don't mention Abady but that is also a good food. I give my dog a combination of Nature's Logic Lamb and Primal (raw).  Since I added the raw into her meals,  her digestive issues have stopped and her coat is soft as silk.  The change is amazing.

I would encourage you to connect with Dr. Kruesi (Cold River Vet) long distance and work with your vet and Dr. Kruesi's office to have blood work results sent to him for analysis and a supplement list suggestion.  He is a genius at nutrition.  He's helped both my dogs tremendously.

Best of luck with your new friend.
