Weird reactions

Question
Ok so i have a dog. One day i took him for a walk and all the sudden this little scottish dog came up to my dog. They started sniffing eachother's butts! Then they started fighting! As for this i was scared so i started pulling my dog away from the other dog and then my dog started growling at me, teeth and all! And after this all ended my dog loved me again. So i was freaked out. What happened? Did my dog do something wrong? Or was that just a weird little dog looking for trouble?

IT IS TYPICAL FOR SOME DOGS OF THE SAME SEX, MALES OR FEMALES TO GET INTO A FIGHT.  IT MUST NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN, U MUST BE IN CHARGE AND BOSS OF YOUR DOG AT ALL TIMES.  ALL DOGS NEED A LEADER TO LEARN RIGHT FROM WRONG.
DO NOT LET HIM DO AS HE PLEASES ON A LEASH NO MATTER, IF A DOG STARTS TO APPROACH, TELL YOUR PET, NO NO.  CHASE THE OTHER DOG ON ABOUT ITS BUSINESS AS YOUR DOG MUST ALSO DEFEND ITSELF.  BUT, FIGHTING CAN BECOME A BAD HABIT AND HE WILL BECOME THE DOMINANT ONE IF LEFT GO.
U DID NOTHING BUT LET THE FIGHT START, DO NOT LET A DOG COME UP AND SNIFF YOURS.  KEEP MOVING AND CHASE THE DOG AWAY AND TALK TO YOUR DOG STATING YOUR NOT GOING TO FIGHT AGAIN.  THEY KNOW WHAT YOUR SAYNG.
